CRB-Anim Network of Biological Ressources Centers for domestic animals

CRB Anim is a network of biological resource centers housing reproductive material and genomic samples from French domestic species. The goal of this infrastructure is to provide samples and knowledge about the samples to sustain research dedicated to answering major concerns about biodiversity threatening, and to face this new era of genomics where the relationship between phenotype and genotype in domestic animals is at stake. CRB Anim is a national program "Infrastructure for research in biology and health". The project is extended until 2022

Objectives : Ensure the development and the characterization of biological sample collections in domestic animals, to support researches on animal biodiversity, on genotype/phenotype interactions in farming conditions, on genetic diseases (dogs as a model). 

Strategies

  • Set up a network of the existing Biological ressources centers (BRCs) (DNA, RNA, reproductive cells, somatic cells, embryos, tissue banks), in order to make available identified and characterized collections which can be used by the scientific and industrial community.
  • Improve torage conditions and quality of the samples preserved in cryobanks and in genomic BCRs, boost the availability of the samples for the community.

Groups involved in INRA Rennes laboratories. This project involves:

  • The "Cell cryopreservation and fish regeneration group" managed by Catherine Labbé
  • The "Testicular physiology and puberty group" managed by Jean-Jacques Lareyre
  • The experimental laboratory PEIMA (Sizun) managed by Laurent Labbé is involved as well
  • This project also rely on the involvement of the aquatic section of SYSAAF (Syndicat des sélectionneurs Aquacoles et Avicoles Français)
  • and that of the Cryobank for Aquatic Species CRYOAQUA located at CREAVIA (Saint Aubin du Cormier)

The groups involved within Inra LPGP and Inra PEIMA will ensure the cryopreservation of all Inra aquatic resources, as already initiated in the AIP Bioressources internal program. It will allow that all fish strains used by Inra researcher be available in the French National Cryobank collections . Additionally, researches will be developed to improve the security and usability of the cryopreserved samples

  • by improving the methods for preparation, characterization and cryopreservation of cells and tissues
  • by studying the effect of the preservation technologies on the quality of the offspring sired from the cryopreserved material, with a specific attention to putative epigenetic alterations.

Others partners in Bretagne

  • IFREMER Brest-Argenton, will ensure research and cryopreservation on marine species, including sea bass, red drum, pacific oyster, and giant clam
  • At the CNRS UMR 6290 in Rennes, the group Dog Genetics is a key partner for pet resources, both for research on genetic diseases using dog as a model, and for the Cani-DNA bioBank where major resources for research on genetic disorders are stored.

 Did you know it? Contrarily to mammals and molluscs, fish oocytes and embryos cannot withstand cryopreservation, because of the fragility of the yolk sac (acting as a reservoir of nutriments for embryo development). At LPGP, the researchers involved in the project are studying alternative approaches which involve cryopreservation of spermatogonial stem cells or that of differentiated fin cells. Researches deals with the development of regeneration methods from these cells which are unusual material in conventional reproductive technologies.
